Caroline M. Clay collection of sermons and eulogy 1857-1891

This collection consists of one eulogy and three sermons. The eulogy was delivered by the Honorable W. G. Brantley on James Hamilton Couper, 1794-1866. Brantley outlines Couper's success as a plantation owner in Glynn County, Georgia. Couper experimented with sugar cane, and grew cotton, rice, and olive trees on his plantation, Hopeton. Brantley also recounted Couper's care of his slaves and his loyalty to the Confederacy despite his aversion to succession. Two of the sermons were delivered by Dr. Isaac Stockton Keith Axson, 1813-1891, in January, 1874, at the Independent Presbyterian Church, Savannah, Georgia, where he served as minister from 1857-1891. The first sermon, The Lord is Pitiful of Tender Mercy, discusses the Lord's mercy and pity of sinners. The second sermon, It Came to Pass That After These Days That One Told Joseph, 'Beloved Thy Father is Sick,' concerns the death and resurrection of Jesus. The undated third sermon, A Sermon on Infant Baptism, by J. S. C. (possibly James Stark Clay, brother of Caroline Clay) traces the practice of infant baptism and the precedents for it.
